At long last another addition to our slowly growing list of Farsi expressions – Sar o Kale Zadan.

And at long last some very appreciated feedback in the comment section, who has explained the following:

سر = Head , کلہ short form of کُلاہ = Turban/Hat/Cap/Crown/helmet
Literal meaning is to move the head with the headgear.
Figurative meaning is to get head stuck that is to get seriously engaged.

This expression has two uses, the first meaning is similar to ‘Bahs Kardan’, ‘Goftugu Kardan’ and denotes an idea of two people debating, talking long or potentially with feeling about something. However, today’s example is for the second example which as you can see above, I have translated in several ways, and it gives the idea of struggling and persisting to learn how to do something. A simple but very useful example sentence for this verb that I have used a lot since learning it, which I have translated slightly differently again,

‘in ghadr sar o kale zadam ke bilaaxere dastam umad!’

‘I persevered so much until I finally got it!’

As that guy Theodore Roosevelt once said,

“Nothing in the world is worth having or worth doing unless it means effort, pain, difficulty…”

And I think that can definitely be applied to the long journey that is language learning –
